Margaret Riegel is painter based in New York City and East Quogue, NY

Before turning her attention to painting, Riegel had a successful career as a photo-illustrator for editorial, corporate, and publishing clients. As an early pioneer of digital art, she enthusiastically embraced Photoshop and its unique possibilities. More than thirty years later, the urge to return to tactile, traditional methods of image-making surfaced, a drive only intensified by the rise of AI.

Riegel built upon her BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art (1984) by training in the atelier tradition at the Grand Central Atelier to advance her practice, This combination allows her to merge a rigorous technical foundation with a contemporary, graphic sensibility.

Her highly designed compositions are marked by a charm and subtle irregularity that lend the finished works warmth and presence. She is drawn to mundane objects carrying the traces of time, such as worn textiles and vintage utensils whose beauty can be overlooked.
